Paolo Bernardi, University of Padova, Italy
Paolo Bernardi (MD, 1978) is a Professor of General Pathology and Pathophysiology in the University of Padova, Italy. He pioneered the study of mitochondrial channels and their role in cellular pathophysiology, in particular the permeability transition pore (PTP). His work has dissected many of the key regulators of the PTP, and has allowed to document its role in disease in vivo, in particular in the pathogenesis of collagen VI muscular dystrophies. His recent identification of novel classes of PTP inhibitors holds great promise for the treatment of PTP-dependent diseases.
